12/29/2006 Ear-cutting Zeal When a crowd showed up to arrest Jesus, Peter took a sword and cut off the ear of the High Priest's servant. Those who reach out to the lost using modern evangelistic methods are a little like Peter. They have zeal without knowledge. They are using the Sword of the Spirit to cut off the ears of the world. When someone makes a commitment to Christ without having a knowledge of sin (which comes by the Law), it's not long until they fall away from the faith. The sad fruit of their experience is that they become "Gospel hardened." Their ear is no longer open to the claims of the Gospel. They have been inoculated to the truth. We must make sure that we are never guilty of adulterating the Gospel. We must make sure that we have "sound doctrine," especially when it comes to reaching out to the lost. 12/30/2006 What Are They Saying? Jesus asked Peter, "Who do men say that I am"(Matthew 16:13)?  Peter had heard what people were saying about Jesus. Do you know what people are saying about Him? Do you talk to people about Jesus? Some think He was a great teacher. Others think He was a good man with some good ideas. Others hate Him because of what He said. But there are millions who believe He was the Son of God, that He rose from the dead, but they have never repented and trusted in Him for their eternal salvation. How utterly tragic. No doubt, their deception is that they think that they are good enough to go to heaven. They believe in God, in Jesus, and in their own morality as a means of entrance into immortality. 1/1/2007 Illegitimate Children When we remove words like sin, repentance, judgment, and Hell from our message, we are in danger of preaching "another Gospel." If it’s not the whole truth, it’s no longer the truth at all. It becomes illegitimate and produces illegitimate children, who call God their father, but still serve the devil. The great key to making sure that we are never guilty of this is to say with Paul, "In the sight of God we speak in Christ." In other words, the words we speak are never dictated by a fear of offending sinners on earth. Instead, they are dictated by the fear of offending a holy God in Heaven. Nothing compromises truth like seeking the approval of men. And nothing ensures the truth like seeking the approval of Almighty God. There goes another minute. Gone forever. Now here's the second scenario: You are hesitating by the water's edge. Suddenly you see your beloved four-year-old sink beneath the water in front of you. He's drowning! Do you still think about the cold water? No! Not for a second. Every day 150,000 people sink into the cold waters of death. 1/3/2007 Compassionate Firefighter Do you ever think about the reality of Hell? Jesus spoke more of Hell than He did of Heaven. Such thoughts can do us good if we are compassionate of heart. That will drive us to make a difference, and pull sinners from the fire, as the Scriptures tell us to. Think of a compassionate firefighter. He's diligent in training because he knows what fire can do to human beings. He may even make himself looks at horrific images of actual fire scenes. This helps him to cultivate sobriety in his heart. It helps him to see the seriousness of the task he has before him. Today let's meditate for a moment on the terrible fate of the unsaved, and then, with the help of God, pull them from the fire. There goes another minute. Gone forever. 1/4/2007 He Named the Beggar Do you remember the story Jesus told of Lazarus and the rich man in Luke 16? Think about how He graphically described the horrors of eternal judgment. Think on how (when He began to tell this story) Jesus said, "There was," and actually named the beggar. We mustn't feed complacency by believing that the story is allegorical or just some sort of metaphor. There is a literal and terrifying place called Hell, and we need to daily remind ourselves of its existence. Perhaps today, you and I need to seek God in heartfelt prayer, expressing our thoughts about our attitudes toward the fate of the lost, and pleading with God to deepen our concern. Righteousness without love is no defense against the enemy. The religious Pharisees had a form of righteousness, and yet Jesus still called them sons of the devil. The Bible tells us that without love, we are nothing. Charles Spurgeon said, "Love should give wings to the feet of service, and strength to the arms of labor." So, if you are a Christian, today make sure your heart is guarded with the breastplate of righteousness, by never allowing sin to have any dwelling place in your heart. Romans chapter 3 gives us God's perspective of humanity: No one understands or seeks after God. All have turned away from Him. They have together become filthy. There is no one who does good, not even one. The world may consider it a good thing when a celebrity gives millions of dollars to charity. God, however, sees the motive for the act, which may be guilt for a past sinful lifestyle. As long as the world is left without the light of God's Law, it will be in the dark as to the true meaning of the word "good." Biblically, it means "moral perfection." There goes another minute. 1/22/2007 Confronting the Hypocrite In Luke 16:14, Jesus said to the covetous Pharisees, "You are they who justify themselves before men." Not only did they seek justification in the sight of men, but no doubt, they attained it. In other words, if we looked at a Pharisee, we would say, "There goes a righteous person. There goes someone who is right with God." But Jesus then said that God saw their thought-life, and that of which man thinks highly is an abomination in the sight of God. Try to relive the emotions of the day of your conversion. Did the Law condemn you? Did it send you to the cross? What part did your conscience play in your salvation? Did it suddenly come alive, or had it been speaking to you for some time? What do you think was your greatest sin? Were you afraid of God? Was there a knowledge of future punishment? Most of all, think of what would have happened to you if you had died in your sins. 1/30/2007 Building Relationships Most of us would agree with the philosophy of what is known in Christian circles as "friendship evangelism." This is the idea that we should befriend someone and then build a relationship with them beforewe witness to them. There's nothing wrong with that. It' good to build relationships, but the question is how long do we wait building the relationship before we speak ot them about thier relationship with God. Jesus built a relationship with the woman at the well in just a few minutes. What happens to your unsaved friend if he dies while you are taking the time to build a friendship with him? 1/31/2007 Witnessing the Strangers Who are some of the hardest people to whom we witness? Isn't it our friends and relations? Why is this? It's because if we witness to someone with whom we have a good relationship and offend him, we risk losing that relationship. But if we witness to a stranger and he gets offend, we have lost nothing at all. So, it makes sense to make it easier for ourselves and learn to witness to strangers. We should make witnessing to strangers a way of life. Doing it regularly will help to make it easier for us to be bold with those we hold dear. Whoever we speak to, we must develop a sense of urgency, knowing that the person to whom we are speaking may not have tomorrow. Today is the day of salvation. There goes another minute. Gone forever. 2/01/2007 Go Your Way Never be discouraged if someone suddenly wants to terminate a witnessing conversation. Paul's conversation with Felix the Governor was suddenly terminated. Felix said, "Go your way..." The Bible tells us why Felix did that. He was trembling. The Law has that effect on those that are guilty. Paul reasoned about righteousness (which is of the Law) and judgment (which is by the Law). He spoke about "temperance," and the guilty governor tremble and terminated the conversation. The Apostle may not have seen him trembling, and been disheartened. So never be discouraged when a conversation suddenly ends. Agitation or anger is a good sign that something is going on in the heart. Don't give up on the person. Use the secret weapon of closet prayer. God can continue speaking to him, even if you can't. 2/12/2007 Negative Thoughts The Scriptures tell us that we don't wrestle against flesh and blood, but against a spiritual world (See Ephesians 6:12). We are surrounded by demonic forces that bombard our minds with fears and negative thoughts when it comes to seeking the lost. If you think that those fears are from your own mind, you won't bother using the full armor of God as listed in Ephesians chapter 6, but if you believe the Scriptures-that you have a very real enemy, then you will see that you need a very real armor. Despite this, most of us forget that the spiritual realm is the source of fearful thoughts. So, do what the Bible says, and put on the whole armor of God. When the negative thoughts come, resist them "steadfast in the faith,"(1 Peter 5:9) and then seek and save the lost with all your heart. There goes another minute. Gone forever.
